Alone Inside Themselves

Trapped in a world - So misunderstood

The warmth in the eyes - Says all that it should

Although sometimes silent - Express loud and clear

Their needs, wants, desires - A friendly face to be near

Their shape has no preference - Nor age young or old

To teach them to triumph - Your heart they will hold

Someday perhaps science - Will bless us with cure

Till then we will nurture - May our patience endure

A great post. Ever read the book Nobody Nowhere?

psyched said...

I did read that actually! A long time ago. By Donna Williams? She also wrote Somebody Somewhere.

Have you read Thinking In Pictures by Temple Grandin?

Yep. You got it. Heard about thinking in pic but not read it - good?

yep, it's really good. I'm dying to hear her speak. BUT, if you're gonna read a book - I recommend the ones by Torey Hayden. My FAVORITES!

REad all hers years ago but find them all similar. She has a certain style of approach which can or cannot work. she also manages to find that all the children with special needs are suffering fromm abuse which again is not the case, or perhaps she just writes about the ones that are. Any other good books?

hmm...I'm gonna have to disagree with the Torey analysis (sorry...she's just a huge role model of mine!) ;) I did my thesis for college on selective mutism and found that the previous research (prior to let's say...1985) focuses a lot on abuse, however the more recent research supports the idea that SM occurs as a result of a social anxiety disorder in children.

I don't think Hayden classifies all children with special needs as sufferers from abuse...she just focuses in on her specialty (SM); and how she gets those children to speak, function in the world, and understand love. But, as I mentioned above, the etiology of SM differs in opinion....

Have you read her most recent book "Twilight Children?" It takes the spotlight off abuse a little.

What kind of books? I have a lot on abuse/neglect.. but I gather from your last post, it doesn't quite interest you.

so...blogarithm keeps telling me you've posted. Better make it true, then. ;-)

For some reason, though it's not really similar, your poem reminds me of another great piece, an essay called "I am the child."
